Many companies encourage teamwork, brainstorming, and collaboration at work. This can be very effective when the team has a wide variety of skills and expertise. As much as people with ADHD often thrive during brainstorming sessions, not sticking to the timelines of tasks you’re responsible for in a group setting may throw off the whole team and project. Let’s look at tips to make this easier for you:

Understand the expectations . Know exactly what the team expects from you. Clarify each team member’s role and make sure everyone knows exactly what they’re responsible for, what their deadlines are, and what impact not meeting these deadlines can have on the rest of the team.

Keep the balance . When the team is busy brainstorming, be careful not to take over the conversation. If you have hyperactive-type ADHD, you may get so excited by the ideas that you may have difficulty restraining yourself so that your coworkers can share their ideas. Be mindful of this. Share your fantastic ideas, but give your colleagues the chance to do the same.

Pick the right environment . Setting the scene for team meetings is very important, especially if some of the team members have ADHD. If you’re having the meeting in a noisy restaurant filled with distractions, the chances are good that you may struggle to focus. Instead, a boardroom with little-to-few stimuli might be a better option.

Record all meetings . If you’re scared you won’t remember what was said during your team meetings, don’t wait for the minutes of the meeting to be distributed to confirm what tasks you’re responsible for. Speak to a trusted team member right after the meeting, or record the entire meeting on your phone so that you can make sure you didn’t miss anything.

Always stick to your deadlines . When you’re working in a group adhering to deadlines might be the most important aspect of your tasks. Schedule your tasks way before the time, give yourself a limited time you’re allowed to work, and let your hyperfocus do its magic.
